It takes two to tension
Ever realized that the seabed is partly covered with pipelines that transport oil and gas from one place to the other? The installation of these pipelines are done by a pipelaying vessel. This vessel is equipped with pipe tensioners, mostly in combination with traction- and storage winches.
In this specific case we supplied two planetary gearboxes with female output spline shaft which are directly connected to the shaft that drives the tensioner track. The gearboxes have a dynamic peak torque of something less than 200.000Nm.
To statically hold the pipe in the tensioners, the gearboxes have a spring applied, hydraulically lifted disc brake with a brake torque of almost 1.300Nm. The units are driven by axial piston motor with 110cc displacement.
